Tata Steel is investing £1.25 billion to secure a more sustainable future for steelmaking at Port Talbot with the construction of a new electric arc furnace production facility at the site in Wales
Our client had the opportunity to tender for the management of civil, structural and building works, and we provided bid writing support, working with its subject matter experts to write the solution in a compelling manner.
The opportunity
As the largest investment in the UK steel industry for decades, the project will safeguard the UK’s steel sovereignty, secure steelmaking in Port Talbot and preserve 5000 jobs. This transformation will address the ageing profile of the existing heavy-end assets and declining reliability that has resulted in challenging operating conditions, lower volumes and higher costs of production and maintenance. The new assets will reduce the UK’s entire industrial carbon emissions by 8% (and Port Talbot’s by 90%).
EiB approach and involvement
Led by Strategic Bid Consultant Richard Roddie our bid writers worked with the client’s team through storyboard sessions, writing and in-depth review periods to constructively challenge the responses. This included topics such as project management, commercial, health and safety, supply chain management and specific project case studies. During the storyboard sessions, we worked with our client to understand its approach and the added value it could bring to Port Talbot, before starting to draft and review the responses. At each review stage, Richard provided constructive challenge to enhance the submission and align with Tata Steel’s requirements.
We integrated seamlessly with the client team through a hybrid approach to working, remotely and at their offices. This supported collaborative working where we could effectively draw on the expertise and knowledge of subject matter experts and the client’s bid team to further refine, challenge and improve the content of the responses. To fine-tune the responses prior to bid submission, we supported the final ‘gold’ review of proofreading and consistency checks to convey the solution in a compelling manner.
Success and outcomes
Our client successfully secured the contract, building upon its current successful work at Port Talbot and providing it with the opportunity to contribute to the transformational project for three years.
