How did you enter the world of bidding?
Like many bid professionals, I left university having completed my English and creative writing degree and knowing that I wanted to write for a living but being completely unsure about the options. I applied for a bid writer role with a global electrical wholesale business, and was fortunate that my first manager, who has been a huge influence on my career, took a chance on me. Although it took a while to adjust to the demands of a career in bidding, the role turned out to be a great fit and provided an excellent foundation to build my career from.
What advice would you give to someone looking to become a bid writer?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. No matter what sector you are operating in, bids and tenders are full of obscure acronyms and complex topics, and it’s easy for bid professionals to fall into the trap of thinking that they need to be an expert. Lean on your professional network – whether that is subject matter experts or colleagues, as you’ll deliver better outputs if you feel confident about what you’re writing about than you will if you’re second guessing it.
How will you bring your experience to support EiB’s growth?
I have been fortunate to work across several different sectors to date – from electrical wholesale to engineering consultancy, building services and marketing services. This has exposed me to a range of public and private sector bids, which will hopefully enable me to bring valuable and diverse insights to the EiB team. By joining EiB as a senior bid consultant, I will also be able to bring my extensive experience of end-to-end bid management to be adaptable when supporting my peers.
What are you most looking forward to at EiB?
I am really looking forward to working with, and learning from, the variety of bid professionals at EiB. Bidding can be a lonely world when you’re working in-house, so it’ll be great to work alongside people that get the quirks of the job! I’m also really excited by the variety of clients and sectors we support, and to take advantage of the excellent continuous improvement and learning opportunities EiB offers its employees. This is a really exciting new chapter for me!
